The Skaginn 3X turnkey onboard solution for frozen groundfish is breaking new ground in demand-driven fishing. As market demands shift, the Skaginn 3X can respond in real time with simultaneous processing lines and the VersaPack™ system, which allows producers to pick, pack and freeze a range of product in response to demand onshore, yet palletize in an optimized way that fully utilizes pallet space.

The innovative Skaginn 3X equipment is characterized by a high level of precision automation, including computerized visioning, batching, freezing, packaging and palletization. Moreover, the entire system is purpose-designed for operation at sea and to support high energy efficiency while minimizing the overall carbon footprint. As with all Skaginn 3X technology, product quality is a priority, made possible here by a short production time, low temps, optimized bleeding and non-pressure freezing.

System Overview

The Skaginn 3X turnkey solution for groundfish onboard frozen processing is highly customizable. Below is an example of a buildout, although the solution offers great flexibility and is invariably configured to meet each client’s particular needs by the Skaginn 3X team of engineers and designers in close collaboration with the client.

1. Catch enters processing deck
  • Brought to heading quickly but with gentle handling
  • Processing flows for groundfish (cod, haddock, saithe, etc.) and redfish
  • Multiple onward lines from each station
  • Rapid workflow into bleeding
2. ValuePump™ sets new standard in transport logistics
  • Replaces belts, chutes and tubs with value-added conveyance for various product (whole round fish, fillets, portions, roe, liver or heads and frames)
  • Combines conveyance with product treatments (bleeding, chilling, surface disinfection, heating, etc.) in a single process
  • Closed, low-pressure system is gentle and hygienic
3. Vision Whole Fish Grader uses computerized visioning to grade groundfish for size, weight and species
  • Compatible all major groundfish species with 99% accuracy
  • Creates record of individual fish, creating basis for full traceability
  • Rapid flowthrough keeps system at optimal capacity
  • No operator required, saving on labor
4. Redfish Grader uses species-specific V-grading conveyors to sort mechanically by size
  • High capacity at 15 tons per hour
  • Flexible size-grading
  • Grading improves filleting accuracy and product yield
5. Product mix batched and configured from simultaneous processing lines with VersaPack™
  • Pick, pack and freeze market-ready product at sea
  • Complete flexibility in product mix—different species, different cuts, different packaging—in unified workflow
  • Modular tray sizes mean total optimization on pallet
6. Automated loading in Onboard Automatic Contact Freezer
  • Specially designed for operation at sea
  • Non-pressure freezing preserves natural appearance
  • Eliminates vertical plate freezing and its crushing effects on product quality
  • Utilizes deck height to save floor space
  • Runs up to 7 days between defrosting
  • Eliminates heavy lifting for safer working conditions
  • Size of packing units (cartons, bags and naked product) optimized for palletizing, leaving no wasted space on pallet
  • Loaded, wrapped, labeled pallet moved to cargo hold via elevator
  • When cargo hold is full, palletizing hotel serves as cold storage
  • No sorting on land necessary—product emerges ready for transport
