The Crab Packing System by Skaginn 3X is a new crab packing line with an automatic sorting mechanism control by a computerized vision and weighing unit, which sorts the product based on size, weight, quality and conditions. The product is then delivered to the right workstation where it is packed by hand.
The problem of sorting crabs based solely on weight is that large individuals can be incorrectly categorized as small individuals if they are lacking arms. The vision unit counts the number of leg number on each individual and categories the product based on both weight and leg number. This automatic sorting mechanism eliminates the need for manual sorting and greatly increases packing capacity. The controlled flow ensures the first-in, first-out (FIFO) principle, where the first individual to enter the system is also the first one out.
An additional benefit of the system is that the vision unit works as an automatic quality control unit where the system examines each individual based on muscle color and identifies individuals that are considered non-fresh.
